Customizing Your Footer Layout – Complete Guide

Your website’s footer is more than just the bottom of the page – it’s a valuable space for important links, contact information, and building trust. dSite Theme v1.4.0 gives you complete control over your footer with 4 professional layouts and extensive customization options.

Footer Layout Options

Choose from 4 professional footer layouts in Appearance → Customize → Footer Settings:

1. Four Column Layout (Default)

  • Structure: 4 equal-width widget areas
  • Best for: Feature-rich footers with lots of content
  • Ideal content: About, Quick Links, Services, Contact Info
  • Perfect for: Large practices with multiple locations or comprehensive services

2. Three Column Layout

  • Structure: 3 equal-width widget areas
  • Best for: Balanced footer with good amount of content
  • Ideal content: About, Quick Links, Contact Info
  • Perfect for: Most medical practices – the sweet spot

3. Two Column with Logo

  • Structure: Left column (logo + description), Right columns (2 widgets)
  • Best for: Brand-focused footers
  • Ideal content: Logo/branding, Quick Links, Contact
  • Perfect for: Building strong visual identity

4. Minimal Layout

  • Structure: Single centered column
  • Best for: Simple, focused websites
  • Ideal content: Essential links and contact info only
  • Perfect for: Solo practitioners with minimal content

Changing Footer Layout

Switch between layouts instantly:

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize → Footer Settings
  2. Find “Footer Layout” setting
  3. Select your preferred layout:
    • Four Column – 4 widget areas (default)
    • Three Column – 3 equal columns
    • Two Column – Logo + 2 columns
    • Minimal – Single column centered
  4. Click Publish
  5. Go to Appearance → Widgets to add content to footer widget areas

Footer Logo

Display a separate logo in your footer – perfect for light/white logos on dark backgrounds.

Setting Up Footer Logo:

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize → Footer Settings
  2. Check “Show Footer Logo”
  3. Click “Footer Logo” to upload
    • Recommended: White or light version of your logo
    • Format: PNG with transparent background
    • Size: 300x100px or similar ratio
  4. Adjust “Footer Logo Width” (50-400px)
  5. Click Publish

Pro Tip: If your main logo has dark colors, create a white/light version specifically for the footer!

Footer Colors

Customize all footer colors to match your brand:

Available Color Controls:

  • Footer Background Color: The main footer background (default: dark gray #1f2937)
  • Footer Text Color: Body text in footer (default: light gray #9ca3af)
  • Footer Heading Color: Widget titles and headings (default: white #ffffff)
  • Footer Link Color: Clickable links (default: blue #60a5fa)

Customizing Footer Colors:

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize → Footer Settings
  2. Find the color picker controls
  3. Click each color to open picker
  4. Choose your colors or enter hex codes
  5. Changes appear live in preview
  6. Click Publish when satisfied

Color Scheme Recommendations:

Dark Professional (Default):

  • Background: Dark gray (#1f2937)
  • Text: Light gray (#9ca3af)
  • Headings: White (#ffffff)
  • Links: Blue (#60a5fa)

Light Clean:

  • Background: Light gray (#f3f4f6)
  • Text: Dark gray (#374151)
  • Headings: Black (#111827)
  • Links: Blue (#2563eb)

Brand Match:

  • Background: Your primary brand color
  • Text: Contrasting readable color (test 4.5:1 contrast)
  • Headings: White or light color
  • Links: Your secondary brand color

Copyright Customization

The footer bottom area displays copyright text and optional credits. Fully customize it!

Dynamic Placeholders:

  • {site_name} – Replaced with your site name
  • {year} – Automatically updates to current year

Customizing Copyright Text:

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize → Footer Settings
  2. Find “Copyright Text” field
  3. Enter your text, using placeholders:
    • Example: “© {year} {site_name}. All rights reserved.”
    • Example: “Copyright {year} by {site_name} | Licensed Medical Practice”
  4. HTML is supported for links:
    • Example: “© {year} {site_name}. Privacy Policy“

Credit Toggles:

  • Show “Powered by WordPress”: Display WordPress credit (on by default)
  • Show Theme Credit: Display “Theme by BLORIEN” (on by default – we appreciate it!)

You can turn these off, but we’d be grateful if you keep them 🙂

Social Icons in Footer

Control where your social media icons appear in the footer.

Social Icons Position Options:

  1. Top of Footer: Displays with footer widgets
    • Best for: Two-column layout with logo
    • Prominent placement
  2. Bottom of Footer: Displays with copyright (default)
    • Best for: All layouts
    • Clean separation
  3. Hide in Footer: Don’t show social icons in footer
    • Best for: If you show them in header top bar
    • Minimal footers

Setting Up Social Links:

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize → Social Media
  2. Add URLs for:
    • Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
    • LinkedIn, YouTube
  3. Only filled-in social links will appear
  4. Icons appear automatically in footer

Footer Widgets

Add content to footer widget areas to create an informative and useful footer.

Adding Footer Widgets:

  1. Go to Appearance → Widgets
  2. Find footer widget areas (Footer 1, Footer 2, Footer 3, Footer 4)
  3. Drag widgets into footer areas
  4. Configure each widget
  5. Save changes

Recommended Footer Content:

Footer Area 1 – About/Logo:

  • Text widget with practice description
  • Or use footer logo + tagline
  • Keep it brief (2-3 sentences)

Footer Area 2 – Quick Links:

  • Navigation Menu widget
  • Links to key pages:

    • Privacy Policy, Terms

  • Custom Menu or Categories widget
  • Your service areas or specialties

Step 1: Choose Layout

  1. Decide how much content you need in footer
